William Smathers, CIC, CISR, President. In its fiftieth year of operation, Bill joins the family insurance business after a long and successful tenure as a local real estate broker and appraiser.
He will become a key feature for the Agency’s ongoing success as he matches his personal philosophy of superior account service with that of the agency’s, helping to provide all clients with a broad range of alternatives to help them properly choose strategies that best meet their particular requirements. Bill has the following Pennsylvania insurance lines of Authority- Casualty and Allied Lines; Property and Allied Lines; as well as Accident and Health, Life and Fixed Annuities.
He has completed A Dynamics of Selling Program endorsed by Selective Insurance and the Certified Insurance Counselor Education Program, sponsored by the National Alliance for Insurance Education and Research, proving his dedication to the needs of the Agency’s clients, and will continue to regularly attend independent and company sponsored workshops and seminars to stay on top of developing industry trends, as well as up to date loss control, risk managements and any insurance changes that effect our area. Mr. Smathers will approach the Agency’s clients business and daily operations with a practical understanding and in turn will provide attentive, well rounded insurance information and he looks forward to the opportunity to be closely involved in the design, implementation and servicing of client coverages.

R. James Smathers CLU, Principal. Jim founded Smathers Insurance with a desire to provide his customers with complete insurance services. After graduating from Clarion State College in 1957, Jim was offered a teaching position in West Middlesex, but chose instead a position with Metropolitan Life Insurance Company selling Life insurance. During the next couple of years he noted that being a captive agent limited his ability to provide options to his customers. Jim left Metropolitan Life in 1962 to open his own agency. Jim received an appointment with Farmers Mutual Insurance Company of Marble, Pennsylvania, which gave Jim the opportunity to sell Homeowners and Fire insurance policies as well as Life insurance. Throughout his career, Jim has welcomed the challenges of the business, constantly learning as the market changes. In addition to his Property and Casualty license, he is licensed insurance broker, a Chartered Life Underwriter, and a Health Insurance Advisor specializing in Health Savings Accounts, Medicare Supplement plans, Medicare Advantage plans, and Part D Prescription Drug plans. Jim is also an active Real Estate Broker.

Jerry Spangler, Commercial Lines Manager. Jerry is the Agency’s Group Life and Health Program Administrator as well as the Commercial Insurance Department Manager. He is a member of the Pennsylvania Land Improvement Contractors Association and the Greater Dubois Area Builders Association. His experience with these groups offers in-depth knowledge in offering customized insurance programs for contractors.
